Human and Environmental Risk Assessment

Launched over 20 years ago by A.I.S.E and the European Chemical Industry (CEFIC), the Human and Environmental Risk Assessment (HERA) project is a European voluntary initiative. It provides a common risk assessment framework for the household cleaning products industry and is committed to partnership between chemicals suppliers and formulators and their representative groups.

In today’s world, where transparency is rightly demanded by both regulators and the general public, HERA places safety assessment data on ingredients used in household products in the public domain and supports the risk-based approach to chemicals legislation in the European Union. It operates an open stakeholder dialogue with regulatory scientists and interested European organisations and has no preconceptions. By providing a common risk assessment framework for the household cleaning products industry, HERA demonstrates our industry’s commitment to a sound scientific basis to risk assessment and the use of a tiered approach to understand the behaviour of chemicals during the use and disposal phase of household cleaning products.  Its approach ensures the use of appropriate and available data thus avoiding unnecessary animal testing.

A.I.S.E. believes that it is essential to provide information about the potential risks posed by chemicals and not just hazards, in order to provide customers and consumers with a balanced perspective and reassurance that we are acting responsibly.
